Under the Aegis: Connecting with Young People in Their World
Discover how Karen Rogers, a Guardian ad Litem at TIGALA, effectively connects with children by engaging in their world, from understanding rap music to learning about Fortnite.
In child advocacy, establishing a genuine connection with young people is essential. Karen Rogers, an experienced Guardian ad Litem at TIGALA, shares some insight into how both understanding and actively engaging in the interests of the children she represents has transformed her approach to her work.
Karen recalls a specific encounter with a young person who was initially reluctant to engage. The child, spending most of his time secluded in his bedroom in a residential centre, started playing loud rap music. Karen recognised the artist – Juice WRLD – and mentioned it, which immediately caught the child's attention.
"How does someone your age know who Juice WRLD is?" he asked, surprised. This moment became a turning point in their interaction, leading to a deeper connection with the child and more open communication.
A stronger connection like this can help a child to really open up to a Guardian ad Litem so that the Guardian can, in turn, share their true wishes and feelings to the court. This is akin to what Dr. NIall Reynolds refers to as ethical practice, which facilitates GALs in providing the highest possible level of support.
You have to be really interested in their world... if you don't talk the talk with them, you get very little and then you're not able to represent them as effectively.
This experience highlights a crucial aspect of Karen's work: the importance of stepping into the world of the young people she works with. "You have to be really interested in their world," Karen explains. She mentions how understanding trends like Fortnite, even if it's not something she is personally interested in, helps her build rapport with children. Karen's willingness to learn about their interests allows her to represent them more effectively in court.
This approach underscores the significance of being relatable and genuinely interested in the lives of the children under her care. Karen’s dedication to understanding the world of the young people she works with ensures that she can represent their voices authentically and effectively.
